Gather 'round, sweet summer children, gather 'round. I'm going to tell you a tale of the before times. Now before I begin, how many here have action figures? Soundtracks? Books? Maybe even a plushie or two? Yes, many of you raised your hands. Good, good. Now what if I were to tell you that many, many years ago, these sacred items were hard to find. But not only hard to find, nigh impossible and very pricey. Well, then you would know what it was like to live in the late 90's and be a huge RPG and anime fan. What? You don't believe me? I didn't even watch my first real anime until 1996. Or for that matter, get online to the world wide web until 1998. You see, back then, the fans lived in uncertainty. That is, anyone living outside Japan. Japan was a dream for people like us. Action figure and stationary shops on every corner. They even started selling video games at 7-Eleven with the release of Final Fantasy VII!

But then, oasisis began to appear in that vast desert: Suncoast, Babbages (aka Software Etc & Gamestop), and even local comic book shops that began to stock anime, RPGs and best of all the merch that went long with them! What was that? Were they affordable? Heavens no! You had to budget for stuff like that, but the point I'm trying to make here is that they were finally hitting what we call "The Mainstream". And I feel that the release and success of Final Fantasy VII definately had a hand to play in that. Well of course there was anime before then, for one that looked hard enough. Conventions were definately a place to find treasures abound. But what I'm talking about is the availability of these items for teens that couldn't convince their parents to take them to a convention. (I didn't see my first unil 1999.)
